I recently visited the Birches Head Get Growing Free For All Christmas Community Exchange Extravaganza. The aim of the project was to support the local community through a "gift model" of support. The event offered people the opportunity to offer to volunteer in their projects or to donate resources and/or skills in exchange for items from the event.
